Rhino Cam #08 – Samsun to Tbilisi
Vino, vino, vino?!! We now know what to expect when some friendly Georgians herald you off the road for a taste of their hospitality. It’s been a strange week since leaving Turkey. Our progress has slowed significantly due to visa challenges, but we’ve definitely had a few little adventures. Highlights from the latest rhino cam included a minor crash (we’re all fine, but rhino cam lucky to be alive), camping on a sprinkler, sleeping under a motorway (again), Johan’s team talk, Chief Wiggum and a bust-up in McDonald’s, bike mechanicals, Georgian wine & dancing, Georgian breakfast (cow foot stew & vodka) and a hangover. Lovely.
Sounds as though you have had a really rough time. I was saving this for later, but maybe it’s time for a hymn.
A new ‘Jerusalem’
(Apologies to William Blake, Hubert Parry, etc.)
And did those men in lycra clad
Cycle o’er England’s mountains green:
And was the swish of bicycle wheels,
Across the world’s great spaces heard!
And did they suffer as they rode,
And did they eat appalling food?
Yet did they pedal on, pedal on,
And claim that they were having fun.
And though their muscles burned like fire;
And though they hated each other after day number 167,
Yet did they pedal on, pedal on.
How glad we are that we weren’t there.
They shall not cease from mental fight,
Nor shall their spirit vanquished be:
Till they have reached the USA,
And saved the rhinos on the way.
Wow Jo. Don’t know how you come up with these. Thanks for getting us on the radio by the way!
do you know the zachary joke? your head looks zachary as sore as your butt!!!
Hahhahah. Riaan, it sounds as if you’re going to be as funny as me one day. I’ll have to think of a good one to tell you at Nature’s in December. Looking forward to seeing you guys then!
